A Weekend of Firsts
- Fri - Ricky and Meghan's first (and hopefully only) wedding
- Sat - First time salsa dancing at Copa
- Sun - First time windsurfing
It was a busy weekend! My dear friends and Kuk Sool training partners Ricky and Meghan were married Friday night. I was honored to be a member of the bridal party. The ceremony was sweet, light-hearted and full of love. The toasts were funny, sometimes long, but nice. The after-party went on late into the night, long after the reception ended, so I was a little slow getting up the next morning. Little sleep didn't stop me from taking a Salsa lesson at Copa and dancing for a few hours afterwards. The lesson covered the basic step, a crossover lead, an outside turn/spin, and a combination of the three. Salsa, it turns out, is a precise art. Once proficient I'm sure there's more leeway to dance by feel, but for now a lot of counting is required of me. While I loved dancing, and had a great partner, I have to admit that watching the amazing dancers at Copa was slightly more exciting than doing the dancing myself. They displayed such a love for the dance, excitement and amazing ability. Even if you don't dance, you owe it to yourself to watch really good salsa dancers at least once.
Have you ever windsurfed? I hadn't until last night. It took me 10 or so attempts to get into the "neutral" position. Getting past neutral, into a sailing or surfing position was not in the cards. It was time for me to hand it over to others to try. Redemption was mine in the second attempt later that night. Maybe I was tired, but I relaxed much more and was able to windsurf out quite a bit before I lost it. I had some help turning the surfboard around so I could windsurf back to shore. It was so much fun I can't wait to try it again! Eventually I suppose I'll learn to turn. But for now, I'll be satisfied with getting to surf at all.
